Our Approach

And who is it for?

Step 1: Stand and Breathe

New students are sometimes surprised to learn that Kung Fu training begins with learning how to simply stand and breathe. Stance training involves a set of postures which improve structure and stability in the body. This practice, along with meditative breathing (Qi Gong) will build mindfulness, body awareness, mental resolve, and overall heath and vitality.

Step 2: Move with Intention

We all move throughout the day, but the tedium of life and injury or fatigue causes disconnection with our bodies and accumulation of inefficiencies. In our classes, you will build proprioception and efficient movement through the practice of codified forms. These involve progressively more complicated patterns of movements - blocking, striking, throwing, kicking, and evading. This movement training is meditative and helps us to be "in our bodies" while we integrate new ideas, new body positions, and new structures.

Step 3: Interpret and Apply

The forms of Hung Gar were developed and refined over centuries by the greatest martial arts masters of their time. They contain techniques ranging from simple defenses to complex grappling and striking techniques. However, simply practicing the forms is not enough for mastery. Nuanced understanding of the intention behind the movements is required to bring the applications to life and make them usable in real world situations.

Step 4: Synthesize

Synthesizing the first three steps is the key to mastery. This happens through dedicated practice of the fundamentals, partner drills, sparring, and learning fighting strategy. In the end, you will develop your own perspective and create a form of unique expression through your personal style of Kung Fu.
